Installation of SQL Server 2012 on Windows
Installation of SQL server 2012 Enterprise Edition on Windows
To install SQL Server 2012, we need to follow below mentioned steps:
step 1: Go to the location where setup file of SQL Server is kept. Right click on the setup file and run this as an administrator.
Step 2: Installation Center
After running setup file, we will be redirected to Installation Center, where we will find different sorts of options like planning, installation, Maintenance etc.
We will click on the installation section and it will be something like below:
We will perform New SQL Server stand-alone installation of SQL Server. We can also add additional features to exiting installed instances of SQL server. Also we can upgrade the SQL Server. Here we will be focusing on installing stand-alone.
Step 3: Setup support Rules
SQL Server basically checks whether all things required for installation met or not. So this is a kind of verification from SQL server end.
Step 4: Install Setup Files
Here setup files will be installed and also if any update for SQL Server setup is found and specified to be included, the update will also be installed.
Once setup files are installed along with updated setup if any found, setup support rules will be looks like something below and gives summary of setup support rules. We can get warning in status. It is okay for dev environment, but in production we need to fix those warnings. Click on next.
Step 5: Installation Type
Here it will basically tell what kind of installation we want, either we can perform new installation or add feature to an existing instance of SQL Server. We will select first option i.e. perform new installation of SQL Server 2012.
In above screenshot, we can see we have already installed different instance of SQL Server.
Step 6: Product Key
Just enter the SQL Server we want to install with product Key and click next.
Step 7: License Term
We just need to accept the license by clicking on “I accept license terms”. Click next
Step 8: Setup Role
In setup role, we will select SQL Server features installation, which basically includes Database Engine services, Analysis services, Reporting service and Integration services and other features.
Step 9: Feature installation
Here we will select the features that we want to included in our SQL Server. Basically we have instance features and Shared features. We select the features according to our requirements.
Step 10: Installation Rules
Here setup again runs to make ensure our machine is compatible for further process or not.
If everything is fine, then click next.
Step 11: Instance Configuration
Here we need to decide what kind of configuration we want for that instance. SQL Server offers two kind of instance configuration.
Default instance – its name will be same as windows name.
Named instance- we can give the name as per our requirement or choices.
If default instance is already installed, then we have to do named instance configuration. In my case I am doing named instance configuration.
Step 12: Disk Space Requirements Summary
This basically tells us, how much disk space will be taken for that particular instance by our machine.
Step 13: Server Configuration
Here we can specify the service account name and their password, if that is provided. Along this we can specify startup type as Manual or Automatic. Recommendation is to select Services to Automatic.
Step 14: Database Engine Configuration
Here we will get three tabs- Server Configuration, Data Directories and FILESTREAM
Server Configuration basically tells about the authentication mode we want. I have selected Mixed Mode and specify the password. and added current user.
Data Directories- It consists of below
Data root directory,System database directory, User database directory, User database log directory, Temp data and log directory, Backup directory.
As per standard of SQL Server in production environment, it is recommended that we should provide different directory for Data, Log, Tempdb and Backup, otherwise performance of SQL Server will hamper.
On FILESTREAM tab, we will find the option to enable the FILESTREAM feature.
Step 15: Error Reporting
Step 16: Installation Configuration Rules
This is the final step where setup will perform a final check to make sure everything is fulfilled to install the SQL Server.
Step 17: Installation Summary
We will get the installation summary as below depicted. Just click on install button and we are set to go.
Step 18: Installation Process
Finally installation process will start and we will see the status bar of the completion of the installation.
Step 19: Installation Complete
Once installation is done successfully, we will see below window and it will display the components installed in our machine for SQL Server with succeed message in status bar.
Step 20: Verification of the installed instance
Open SSMS and connect the instance that we have just installed. We are good to verify.
Use New Query and write- Select @@servername as Server_Name, Also to know about version of SQL we installed write- Select @@version as SQL_Server_Verison
We have finally installed SQL Server 2012 named instance successfully on our machine. In case of any failure during installation, like power off etc, it is highly recommended to uninstall all components related to SQL Server 2012 from Control panel and do a fresh installation.
